Whisky chocolate tickles judges’ tastebuds to win best exhibit in show at Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards

Rick and Theresa Streefland, from Cocobean Chocolate in Launceston, were delighted to win the Royal Hobart Fine Food Award’s coveted Richard Langdon Trophy for best exhibit in show, announced at a dinner at the Hobart Showground tonight.

The couple won the top prize from a record 1492 entrants for their tasty whisky chocolate.

Mrs Streefland said Cocobean Chocolate did not compromise on quality, using Ashgrove milk, butter, cream and other local raw ingredients in its products.

“We absolutely love what we do. I am keen to educate people what chocolate is about,” Mrs Streefland said.

The Streeflands bought an existing chocolate shop eight years ago and have developed a premium niche market.

“It’s about having a go,” Mrs Streefland said.

Entry numbers in the awards, instigated by the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania (RAST) to promote excellence in food-making, were the highest in their 19-year history.

RAST chief executive Scott Gadd said 71 per cent of the trophy winners were Tasmanian producers.

“It’s testament to Tasmania’s fine food and growing interest in the foodie culture,” Mr Gadd said.
